some things to do.

In 2010, I created a list of 29 things to do before I turned 30 (in 2011). I really rocked that list. Although I don't have a fancy milestone coming up, I won't give myself a deadline, but here are some things I'd like to do in the next little while.

- stop using so many exclamation marks!!!
- create some delightful art journals
- learn how to use tilt-shift effect in photoshop
- plan a family vacation (with friends?)
- have a daily dance party
- re-watch every bh90210 episode, marathon style.
- write thank you notes to former teachers
- send more surprises to unsuspecting friends.
- take an online art class
- re-read some of my favourite preteen library books
- host a murder mystery party
- explore Bruce County
- leave notes in library books
- collect some pretty outside blankets
- discover new favourite bands and musicians
- PAINT

What would you like to do?

Resolutions vs. Non-Goals

It is twentytwelve.

2011 was one of my favourite years so far. (new baby, new friends, new perspective)

Two years ago... i compiled a list things that I want to do more of, or be better at in life. It is posted in my closet and here and then here. I think I am doing a pretty rad job fulfilling these. I love my life. These resolutions will continue to be words of wisdom.

Last year... i compiled a list of non-goals. Instead of dwelling on resolutions and ways to improve, I focused more on things that I was already doing well and right - and will strive to continue doing them.

Those are my kind of resolutions. Here we go again (and yes, some are the same).

Lindsay, you have grown to be a fabulously passionate mom. Passionate about breastfeeding and cloth diapering and babywearing and other mom stuff. Elijah has inspired you in a million different ways. Other moms have opened your eyes and mind and heart. Enjoy every minute with your wee babe and keep surrounding yourself with other like-minded, lovely and positive moms.

Lindsay, you are a good and generous friend. You've made some amazing new friends and continue to love your old friends. Some have even called you an inspiration. You often email, comment, make things for, make cards and send secrets in the mail to people, just to show that you care. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you continued to do that. Don't stop.

Lindsay, you've been a crafting machine this year. Not lesson planning or getting educated has left you a lot of time to get creative. You've made cards and gifts and posters and board games and wedding maps and sketches and ornaments and tutus and lots of baked goods and decorations and art journals and mail art and videos and baby scenes and other awesome stuff. You should be so proud of yourself.

Lindsay, you rocked at saving money this year. You and Rob have been doing fine with your maternity leave pay cut. You've been frugal and thrifty and creative. Things have certainly paid off.

Lindsay, you've read a tonne of books this year. You have been loving it. Get lost in a book.

Lindsay, you've really made your house a dream spot to be. You come up with neat ideas and colour schemes. You get inspiration from different places and actually put them into place. With the help of Rob and Pinterest, continue to make your house your home and invite people to share it with you.

Lindsay, you know how you wanted to limit your Internet time? Don't stress too much about it. You've been trying really hard to turn off the screen when other people are around. Way to go! However... the endless websites you discover inspire you in many different ways. They improve your teaching, find inspiration for your home and artwork, let you communicate daily with family and friends and even make you a little bit of extra cash. Don't feel bad about exploring and sharing.

Lindsay, you've become the master of list-making. And although you get made fun of by your husband for them, he secretly appreciates the lists. Big time. Let's keep making lots of lists, k?

time to start. let’s go twentytwelve! It only gets better from here. xoxo.

ps. I would LOVE to hear your non-goals!

I’m 30.

Today I am 30. Three decades. I remember when I turned 10, and my grandma made a big deal about me being one decade. Now I am three. Last year, on my 29th birthday, I posted a list of 29 things to do  before I turn 30. I am sure you are dying to know how I did! (the ones in red I didn't do...)

1. become a guerilla artist I’ve left inspiring notes all over Ontario, I've mailed secret gifts to people in the mail, I've left notes in my library books, I've made flyers.... I will continue this.

2. visit the library more oftenI haven’t bought a book in FOREVER. The library is my new best friend. I went to chapters last month twice and didn't buy ANYTHING. Who have I become?

3. join a book-clubYay! We meet once a month on Tuesday. Reading new books and meeting new people is cool – although I am still pretty shy.

4. host a murder mystery party. Hmm.. I bought a game. That is as far as I got. This is still something I plan to do. I have so many neat ideas in my head. We did host a pretty rad New Years Party though. Does that count?

5. start some traditions - I've been taking weekly and monthly photos of Elijah. I am really excited to start some family traditions in this first year of him. I'll keep you posted on more.

6. visit my familyThis has been happening quite a bit- and even more now that my sister has moved and our baby has arrived.

7. make a list of people we give gifts to at christmas. divide them for each month – gather gifts. I didn’t do this for Christmas 2010 – I started a jar called “Christmas fund” and an inspiration book with ideas for homemade Christmas gifts! For Christmas 2011, I've started gathering gifts as I see them (or create them!)

8. bake more peanut butter cookies - not specifically PB cookies, but I have baked some scones and fruit crisp and chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal squares and cupcakes...

9. make fun things like dioramas and artist notebooks - Art journals, moleskine exchanges, altered books, mail art, MJ game, photos, baby book, inspiration binders, student art projects, christmas decorations, baby announcements, wedding maps, seating charts, buttons, a little bit of sewing

10. make another blurb book hurray! Happy birthday Andrea! I also made a shutterfly mini book.

11. do wii fit regularly - I didn't. I will blame it on being pregnant and having a newborn. I will get my groove back!

12. write letters to people - I didn't hand write a lot of letters this year, but I sent a lot of notes, thank you cards and emails. I've also been a really good commenter on blogs.

13. decorate my walls (perhaps another mural?) - We are continuing to do this. So far I've added a bunch of picture frames. I am still trying to visualize two walls.

14. go outside - I wasn't the greatest of this. Last summer I was newly preggo and so exhausted that I slept away my summer. We also had a long cold winter (and I don't like long cold winters).  Lately though, we've been going for a lot of family walks and enjoying the sunset outside on the balcony. Soccer and tennis have also started up again, and we've been doing some gardening. I hope to spend a lot of time outside this summer.

15. eat lots of fresh food - We've been doing the best we can. I'm pretty proud of myself for my new meal planning and cooking. Me cooking? Yes. Me.

16. buy a patio set - So so close for doing this. Can't decide.

17. plan an amazing math program - I think I am doing a pretty rad job this year! However... I finished work in February for my new teaching position - mom. I'll be back next year with my awesome math.

18. throw a backyard party - We're planning one.  I'm blaming the pregnancy/newborn/weather again. This will happen this summer. Hopefully a few times.

19. explore Bruce County - I'm blaming the pregnancy/newborn/weather again. These are however, our summer plans. For real. The Explore the Bruce Passport has gone coordinates this year! How cool. I'd also love to do some local geocaching.

20. collect some pretty outside blankets - No. I really want to.

21. make more puppets - Good intentions....

22. get some new favourite sensible shoes - I've decided to wait until I go back to work for new shoes.

23. become a better blogger & photographer – i think i’m doing a-ok!

24. love with all of my heartI’m always trying! I’ve found new and unusual feelings of love our sweet sweet Eli.

25. renew my passport - The forms are filled out and in the mail for the whole family.

26. discover new favourite bands and musicians – ongoing

27. make my home pretty – a continuous project. (see wall decorating) - We've also picked out a couch! (I think...)

28. be a good and generous friend. I don’t know of what this is exactly, but I try.

29. PAINT. - I haven't painted a lot this year. I miss it. I have, however, drawn a lot. Lots of type and lots of pencil drawings. I've been working on my value scale. Mr Gombai would be proud. My goal is to get back into painting.

---

Hey! I think I did pretty well. It wasn't an epic fail. Having a newborn put the rest of my list on temporary hold, but now Elijah is 4 months old and things have become much more routine. Yay me. How did you do?

[Happy Birthday to me]

10May/112

Internet junkie.

I am cooler on the internet. I am okay with that. I am less shy & awkward online. Yes, face-to-face is ideal, but that just can't happen all of the time (and I loathe the telephone), but don't make me apologize for my online life thankyouverymuch.

10 Reasons to Stop Apologizing for your Online Life By Alexandra Samuel

1. When you commit to being your real self online, you discover parts of yourself you never dared to share offline.

2. When you visualize the real person you're about to e-mail or tweet, you bring human qualities of attention and empathy to your online communications.

3. When you take the idea of online presence literally, you can experience your online disembodiment as a journey into your mind rather than out of your body.

4. When you treat your Facebook connections as real friends instead of "friends", you stop worrying about how many you have and focus on how well you treat them.

5. When you take your Flickr photos, YouTube videos and blog posts seriously as real art, you reclaim creative expression as your birthright.

6. When you focus on creating real meaning with your time online, your online footprint makes a deeper impression.

7. When you treat your online attention as a real resource, you invest your attention in the sites that reflect your values, helping those sites grow.

8. When you spend your online time on what really matters to you, you experience your time online as an authentic reflection of your values.

9. When you embrace online conversations as real, you imbue them with the power to change how you and others think and feel.

10. When you talk honestly about the real joys and frustrations of the Internet, you can stop apologizing for your life online.

RAD. (thank you Alexandra!)

new years resolute.

1.1.11... welcome aboard!

Last year... i compiled a list things that I want to do more of, or be better at in life. It is posted in my closet and here and then here. They will continue to be words of wisdom.

the cover of my new agenda.

I was browsing some blogs and came across Erin and Bri's non-goals for 2011. Instead of dwelling on resolutions and ways to improve, they focused more on things that they were already doing well and right - and will strive to continue doing them.

Lindsay, you worked really hard this year at your job. Like really hard - and perhaps a little bit anal about it. Never stop being passionate about teaching. Although you'll be taking a break from teaching 9 year olds in a classroom, your talents will come in handy with a new little life very soon. Don't regret loving your job.

Lindsay, you rocked at saving money this year. You and Rob will be just fine for the upcoming financial changes they call maternity leave. Keep saving and saving and things will certainly pay off.

Lindsay, you've read a tonne of books this year. You have been loving it. Get lost in a book.

Lindsay, you've really made your house a dream spot to be. You come up with neat ideas and colour schemes. You get inspiration from different places and actually put them into place. With the help of Rob, continue to make your house your home.

march one.

Shavasana. It gets me every time. For those who are not familiar, it is aka the corpse pose at the end of each yoga class. It sounds so  simple -- you just lay there on your back with your eyes shut and relax. The real challenge though, is to still the mind. I sometimes find myself running through my "to-do list" of things I'll accomplish when I leave yoga. Sometimes I am really good. I listen to K and follow the instructions and my mind becomes still... for a while. Then fragments of thoughts keep messing with my stillness.

Tonight is the perfect example. I find myself in corpse pose. For the first 3/4 of shavasana I am still. I watch my breath in my mind's eye. But then, I find myself comparing the different living rooms of my old favourite sitcoms. Seriously - where does this stuff come from? I was comparing Growing Pains and Who's the Boss. Both houses you enter the front door at the left of the screen. When you walk in the door, the stairs are immediately to the left for the characters. Move inside a bit and it is the living area, and then (and I am almost certain here) you go through a swinging door into the kitchen which is at the right of the screen. I thought about this for a while. I also remember the Golden Girls and Mr Belvedere having a similar set-up. and I think Out of this World did too. Do you think they reused the sets?

Coming home, I promptly did a living room search for these sitcoms, but I surprisingly couldn't find any screen shots. What I did find was something quite rad. Someone on the same wavelength as me perhaps. I love it.

Go!

1Jan/100

resolute.

As a teacher, the start of a new year is always in September, but there is always something so rejuvenating about January. I get two weeks to refresh myself, spending it with people I love, good food and art projects.

things that I want to do more of, or be better at in twentyten.

i will be passionate.
i will think before i talk so that my words will always be kind and positive.
i will collect sweet things.
i will listen. a lot. really listen.
i will go outside.
i will love more, be more openminded, and be a better friend.
i will be healthier.
i will stay home more often and invite people to share and connect with us.
i will play and make art every day.
i will dress more creatively.
i will make new memories, and take more pictures.
i will write more letters and notes without a keyboard.

time to start. let's go twentyten!
