a quick update for Becky.

In the back of my head I keep hearing (post post!). It's not that I don't have anything to post about - I've had some fabulous playdates, gone crazy wtih art journalling and had a terrible bout of sickness. We've also had yummy food and swimming parties and cleaning sprees. I'm not stressed out about going back to work (I'm happily awaiting it's arrival next week) and things seem to be falling nicely into place.

I will return very, very soon with proper posts about life and love and friendship and food and art. xo.

some things to do.

In 2010, I created a list of 29 things to do before I turned 30 (in 2011). I really rocked that list. Although I don't have a fancy milestone coming up, I won't give myself a deadline, but here are some things I'd like to do in the next little while.

- stop using so many exclamation marks!!!
- create some delightful art journals
- learn how to use tilt-shift effect in photoshop
- plan a family vacation (with friends?)
- have a daily dance party
- re-watch every bh90210 episode, marathon style.
- write thank you notes to former teachers
- send more surprises to unsuspecting friends.
- take an online art class
- re-read some of my favourite preteen library books
- host a murder mystery party
- explore Bruce County
- leave notes in library books
- collect some pretty outside blankets
- discover new favourite bands and musicians
- PAINT

What would you like to do?

make art not excuses.

Five days ago I got a message saying... It's been 8 days since you last blogged... just sayin'

I was going to list some excuses as to why this might have been the case (some of these things might include brainfreeze, having more local friends to actually do stuff with, nervousness about being a guest blogger, events to plan for, laziness), but then I thought of this quote - Don't make excuses, make good. And to me, art is good.

(photo via pinterest via Chris Piascik)

But really, I've been pinning like a mad-woman - but I've been making some of my inspirations! (Unfortunately I can't upload many photos because I either forgot to take a pic, it is a Christmas gift, or it is half-finished. I guess you'll just have to come visit me to see!)

What would Erica Kane do?

I am almost embarrassed to post this..... but I will anyways.

Okay. so.... I love All My Children. I know it is a soap opera.  I know it is crap. I know it is farfetched. I know that it has terrible acting and recycled plots. I know. But it has a soft spot in my heart.

My mom and dad watched All My Children for as long as I can remember. I am pretty sure they scheduled their lunch break from 1-2 pm so that they could watch it. My dad would come home at about 12:50, turn on ABC and lay down on the couch with a towel over his face (?). He said he was napping, but I know he was listening. He would come home for dinner every night and ask the same thing... "What happened on the kiddies after I left?" It was always some epic saga with those dreadful Kane women and Brookie-Pooh and TadPole and Lesbianca and Glo-worm and Billy Clyde Tuggle and EmilyAnn and Janet from another Planet.

I watched it with my parents all summer long for all of the summers that I lived at home. My sister and I named our Barbie and Ken dolls Erica Kane, Jackson Montgomery and Dimitri Marick. I taped it when I was in University when I was homesick. I have all mp3s of all of the different theme song versions. I also have a copy of the Complete Family Scrapbook on my bookshelf, an AMC board game and trading cards.

I hadn't watched All My Children in years, but when they announced that it was being cancelled (last episode airing in September), I got a bit nostalgic. I promptly set up my TiVo to tape the final episodes. I also started following the #allmychildren hashtag on Twitter. They are pulling out some crazy storylines for the last episodes. The best is that my favourite character - evil Dr. David Hayward - has been secretly doing human testing for all of the years that he's been in Pine Valley and all of the "dead" people aren't really dead at all and are all coming back to town! [looking forward to see how they explain Gillian coming back. She was shot in the head and then her heart was donated to Laura..... but..... David performed the surgery, so.....hmmm]

I will miss you amc. xoxo.

i am an introvert.

I stumbled across this list this morning in my blogging travels. I recently described myself as "painfully shy" in real life to my newest of great friends and "awkward in social settings" to my principal, but I feel that describing myself as an "introvert" is much more fitting. This list of myths describes what I know about myself to be true. It is actually pretty spot on. I have been mistaken for rude, shy, aloof and no fun in public, but I'm not. Certain criteria just need to be met for me to be my cool self. (read on! - and please comment - all you secret followers)

Myth #1 – Introverts don’t like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days.

Myth #2 – Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an Introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don’t interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an Introvert, just start talking. Don’t worry about being polite.

Myth #3 – Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don’t see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so Introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.

Myth #4 – Introverts don’t like people.
On the contrary, Introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you’re in.

Myth #5 – Introverts don’t like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introverts just don’t like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don’t need to be there for long to “get it.” They’re ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for Introverts.

Myth #6 – Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don’t have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic and sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.

Myth #7 – Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don’t follow the crowd. They’d prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don’t make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.

Myth #8 – Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It’s not that they are incapable of paying attention to what is going on around them, it’s just that their inner world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.

Myth #9 – Introverts don’t know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and Extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.

Myth #10 – Introverts can fix themselves and become Extroverts.
Introverts cannot “fix themselves” and deserve respect for their natural temperament and contributions to the human race. In fact, one study (Silverman, 1986) showed that the percentage of Introverts increases with IQ.

the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

I love fonts.typefaces.letters. love, love them. They are so visually pleasing and make documents and posters so much more awesome. I love how certain fonts make a statement, put a smile on my face and make me think why more people don't use them. I can't exactly explain it. I just love staring at certain fonts. Other people like staring at the stars or the television, I love staring at pretty words. Call me crazy...

{There is, of course, some type that I really dislike - and it really nerves me when they are overused and out of place. It hurts my eyes. It drives me insane.}

These are some of my new favourites...

Here are some rad links related to my typeface obsession.

1) make your own font (uses your handwriting to make a custom font for free!) -

2) i'd love to get my hands on a copy hyper activity typography! best book title ever.

3) type-stache poster - a selection of moustaches.

4) show your knowledge of fonts in a game of typewar!

5) my pinboard of text/print at pinterest

6) a bookmarklet to tell you which fonts websites use - awesome.

6) this site is so great. it truly needs a blog post of it's own. I loathe comic sans.

13Feb/113

spending my time.

watching the days go by.

Today is my official "due date" - February 13th. Although, I think bébé is really quite comfortable and won't be joining us today. I finished work on Friday - so now I am playing the waiting game.

This weekend I have done some art journalling.

I have watched three movies (It's Kind of a Funny Story, High Fidelity, Stranger Than Fiction)

I finished reading a book (The Good Daughters) and started another (Late Nights on Air). I also have another one to pick up at the bibliotheque.

I have re-organized and edited my entire itunes catalogue (although I still have 6.8 days worth of musak)

I started creating a "baby book". Compiled ideas from different books on the market to make our own. So far we have family pages done.

I wrote some thank you notes for the amazing baby gifts we've been receiving.

I joined some new swaps, looked up some geocaches and rediscovered bookcrossing.

We did groceries and dishes and laundry and a general clean-up.

Any suggestions on how to pass my time as we wait the arrival of our new family member? Perhaps I'll tackle this list - although I've already done most of those.

31Jan/110

i love you baby leg warmers.

Baby leg warmers are so darn cute. cute. cute. I love each and every pair of them.

I've commissioned my mom to knit me some. I think I'll also try these tutorials out of funky knee socks.  yes!

baby update: I hit the 38 week mark yesterday. No new symptoms, but I am getting pretty tired of my hands falling asleep every night (and making them stiff and weak during the day). I really feel like greasy pizza or a big fat Big Mac. So terrible.

14Dec/100

on my christmas wishlist.

I haven't really given too much thought to christmas gifts - mostly because I don't exchange gifts with too many people - but a girl can dream, right?

My year-long wish lists are found at amazon (livres) and etsy (check out favourite shops) and wishpot (baby registry). Favourites, of course, include handmade things (and I'm not just saying that).

I thought I would share this item though. It is so rad (but also completely unnecessary). I wish I had it when I was 8.
